ART IN MIAMI: A CONTINUOUSLY GROWING SECTOR When you say “Miami”, the first things that come to mind for most is the idea of having fun, the nice beaches, sun and the sea. However, those who really know the Floridian metropolis also know that these concepts are wrong. In fact, the city government administrations, in recent years, have made a big effort in order to modernize public transportation, promote cultural events, open new museums and reinvigorate certain areas that have been kept away from the core of the city’s life for too long. Undoubtedly, art is a sector that is growing a lot, helping increasing the appeal of Miami. Art Basel of Miami Beach (the US extension of Basel’s contemporary art fair) represents the most important initiative in this field in the United States. Art Basel, which will take place between December 1st and 4th, 2016, attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world. This year the event will reach its thirteenth edition and will host over 260 galleries coming from more than 30 countries, as well as tens of side expositions. Another internationally-renowned event within the modern and contemporary world, that will also take place between December 1st and 4th, 2016, is the Miami River Art Fair, organized by an art Maecenas like Nina Torres. This initiative will be held in the Downtown Miami Convention Center, inside the James L. Knight International Center, and represents an important showcase for galleries, artists, and projects from around the world within a huge bayfront exhibition space on the famous Miami River. Even certain neighborhoods of the city have had big changes in order to embrace the concept of art. The Design District, for instance, has always been a renowned stop for high fashion and luxury-kind of shopping, and now it hosts more than 130 art galleries and showrooms, contributing to enrich an area already characterized by the best of the best in each and every extent. Another good example is definitely Wynwood: originally, this neighborhood was not that known in Miami, especially due to the sleazy and shabby streets and areas you can find here. However, in recent years, Wynwood has had a steady development led by initiatives such as “ArtWalk”, an event that takes place every first Saturday of the month where you can see several artists showcasing their own collections within a very lively atmosphere among bars, lounges, and young people willing to spend an alternative-kind of weekend. Wynwood also hosts permanent outdoor murals by some of the most important woldwide street artists. Although this area cannot claim to boast internationally-renowned art works yet, it actually represents a “must see” for all art enthusiasts visiting Miami. Francesco Famà (corrispondente da Miami)
